How to Calculate Catfish Pond Stocking Density

One of the most common questions in catfish farming is how many fish to stock per pond or container. Stock too few and you waste pond capacity; stock too many and water quality and growth rates suffer.

A widely used benchmark for static (non-flow-through) ponds is 1.8kg of fish per square metre of water surface at harvest. Using that figure, a 2,000m² pond can carry roughly 3,600kg of catfish at harvest weight.

Working backward from a 900g target harvest size, that translates to around 4,000 fish at the point of harvest. Adding a 5% allowance for expected mortality between stocking and harvest brings the initial stocking figure to roughly 4,200 juveniles.

This is a starting benchmark, not a fixed rule — pond depth, water exchange rate, aeration and feeding regime can all shift the safe stocking density up or down. Farmers working with static ponds and limited water exchange should stay conservative; those with strong flow-through or aeration can often push higher.
